Russel (2004) - TCM Online Reader Introduction
From Inventiopedia
Russel, Ben (2004) "TCM Online Reader Introduction". Available at the Internet Archive.
This text describes a project consisting of a "sequence of Transcultural Mapping (TCM) workshops [...] held across Europe through the course of 2004 exploring the new term 'locative media'". This was followed by an open call for papers, resulting in this online reader.
Aside from listing a number of artistic and activistic approaches to exploring locative media, the paper also offers the following description:
Locative media is many things: A new site for old discussions about the relationship of consciousness to place and other people. A framework within which to actively engage with, critique, and shape a rapid set of technological developments. A context within which to explore new and old models of communication, community and exchange. A name for the ambiguous shape of a rapidly deploying surveillance and control infrastructure.
The paper attributes the term 'locative media' to Karlis Kalnins, without giving any reference.
